NIH State-of-the-Science Conference on Symptom Management in Cancer

Natcher Conference Center
National Institutes of Health
Bethesda, Maryland
July 15-17, 2002

An independent, non-Federal panel will weigh the latest scientific evidence on symptom management in cancer and draft a statement addressing the following key questions:

  1. What is the occurrence of pain, depression, and fatigue, alone and in combination, in people with cancer?
  2. What are the methods used for clinical assessment of these symptoms throughout the course of cancer, and what is the evidence for their reliability and validity in cancer patients?
  3. What are the treatments for cancer-related pain, depression, and fatigue, and what is the evidence for their effectiveness?
  4. What are the impediments to effective symptom management in people diagnosed with cancer, and what are optimal strategies to overcome these impediments?
  5. What are the directions for future research?

Presented by the National Cancer Institute and the NIH Office of Medical Applications of Research. Visit the NIH Consensus Development Program for more information.
